One of my clients was having problems setting up email. After tests at our end, I informed them that they might want to contact their ISP (BT) as it seemed that the outgoing email server may have been at fault.
What follows is BT’s response. For the record our mail server address is pop3.exponetic.net. I should know, I built the machine.
The incoming server sounds incorrect it will probably be a pop3 but usually the actuall server address starts ‘mail. and then your email domain i.e. mail.exponetic.net. A simple search in google etc for their incoming mail sever will tell you this or browse their FAQ’s. If it workd from webmail as advised it is simply the information on the servers tab and possibly the incoming port which is incorrect.
Also domain names usually end in .com or .co.uk and not .net which is probably ther web address and not their server address. Please confirm this as this will resolve your issue.
[update]
It turns out that BT make it very difficult for users that use a third party, non BT, hosted domain to use their SMTP service. After some investigation we came across this URL http://www.btconnect.com/maildomain/.
I informed my client to call BT back with clear instructions along the lines of:
- You have a BT Internet connection
- You have an externally hosted email account
- You wish to use BTs SMTP service to send email from an email address that is not BTs.
- You are currently unable to do this, the SMTP server is asking for authentication
Apparently after 7 people she managed to get her domain added to a magic list and she can now send mail through her ISP, how lucky!
