The following was emailed out to opt-in subscribers by Cllr Clyde Loakes on the 12th July 2005. The document has been posted in its entiretly.
That Announcement!
I was always one of the optimistic few and once I saw the 2012 Team’s final amazing presentation to the IOC in Singapore, I knew we had clinched it for sure. I do think that Seb Coe has lead the bid team very well and I’m pleased to have had the level of involvement I have had as the Leader of one of the five Olympic Boroughs……..truly a great honour and privilege.
I wanted to be at Leytonstone for the announcement, but was instead ‘ordered’, by the bid team to Stratford, to front media enquiries on behalf of the 5 Olympic Boroughs. I did the rounds of the worlds media- Sky News, CNN, BBC Radio 4, Virgin Radio, 5 Live and London Radio and Teacher TV! Luckily my Sky News piece was on before the final announcement and enthusiastically I predicted a London win!
This successful bid is going to have a massive impact on Waltham Forest and the whole of east London. The ripple affects will be felt throughout all our walks of life. But I’m in no doubt the affects will be very, very positive- jobs, infrastructure development, regeneration, reputation building and sporting opportunities. This is a truly great and once in a lifetime opportunity to show what we can do in our patch. The world’s attention will be on us for the next 7 years, it’s an opportunity that I have no intention of blowing. The globes largest event on our doorstep…….bring it on!
I think this announcement may go down as one of the ‘where were you moments’ in history. So I’m interested to hear if you were in any interesting places or unusual circumstances?
Clearly we would not have won the bid without the support of residents, particularly in the 5 Olympic Boroughs, so I would just like to say ‘thank you’ for your support on this project to date and I look forward to your continued support as we begin to count down the years, months, weeks and days to July 2012!
It’s been very interesting to witness people’s positive reaction to the Olympic announcement. No word of a lie but people have actually been walking up to me in the streets and shaking my hand, excited about the prospects for Leytonstone and Waltham Forest and optimistic about the future. This optimism has not been deterred by the events of last Thursday.
(NB- I must say I have spent 2 years referring to bringing the Olympics to ‘our manor’ so I’m really pleased and honoured that David Beckham has taken to reading or listening to my speeches, although I’m not aware of him ever being in the same room as me at any point in my entire life!)
Lincolns
They’ve only gone and appealed to the Crown Court now. It just goes to show the arrogance of this establishment. I’ve committed the Borough to continuing to fight the license and we are hoping to retain the services of the same Counsel who fought our corner so well at the Magistrates Court hearing.
As soon as we have dates I will let you know, the details. Be rest assured I will be going to the Court.

I attended the meeting last week, with a large group of residents and I made it clear, that I do not believe that a meeting were residents have significant problems with an establishment, is best served by meeting and being chaired by that establishment. I pledged to set up a meeting in Leytonstone Library, to be chaired by myself, with an agenda set by local residents.
The meeting will be on 27th July, at Leytonstone Library, from 7pm. Please send me anything you wish to be included on the agenda.
Car Free Day 2005
Following on from the past 2 year’s successful event’s, which attracted some 10 thousand visitors to Leytonstone Town Centre, Leytonstone will again be the venue for Car Free Day, in 2005. The date for your diaries is Sunday 18th September.
Once again the event will involve a French Market (I’m sure as we won the Olympics for 2012, we can forgive the French President his rather unfortunate comments!), live bands, stunt performers, cycling displays, a children’s fun fair and much, much more including stalls and displays aimed at raising environmental awareness and the benefits of sustainable transport and healthy living.
I hope to see you there!
St Augustines, St Johns and St Marys
After lobbying hard for some 12 months now, I’ve managed to bring the much needed renovation works forward on the Forest Homes Schedule. Works are due to begin on 18th July and may last for a total of 24 weeks.
This is very good news for the residents involved. The investment is about £500, 000 and involves new windows, waste and refuse points and refurbished stairwells and balconies.
Leytonstone Town Centre Summer Events
I’m really thankful that so many turned up to the big screen showing of the Olympic announcement in Church Lane Car Park. The estimates I’ve seen put it at some 500 people, which is great. Whenever I can I try to bring events to Leytonstone, to make sure we get our fair share of the action. To help spice up the summer and to fill the space between the Leytonstone Festival and Car Free Day, don’t forget the following street dance and music events-
Saturday 2nd July Live Band plus Salsa Dancer- Did you go? Was it fun?
Saturday 9th July Asian Belly Dancer- Did you go? Was it fun?
Saturday 16th July Rock and Roll Dancing
Saturday 23rd July Dancing (Pop video style)
Saturday 30th July French Can Can Dancing
Saturday 6th August Afro/Caribbean Dancing
Saturday 13th August Irish Dancing
Saturday 20th August Russian Cossack Dancing
Saturday 27th August American Line Dancing.
All events are between 2-4pm
Outside Leytonstone Tube Station (Church Lane entrance E11)
Leytonstone High Road Review
I’m pleased that councillors have agreed to look at this again, especially in light of the fairly recent decision by Newham Council to agree the planning application for Stratford City, the largest retail development in Europe, as well as this week’s Olympic decision. Both of these will have significant implications on the future of L’stone High Road. They have the potential to increase significantly the amount of through traffic coming down the High Road.
So it will be interesting to see what councillors, residents and alleged experts suggest as the way forward and what Transport for London will let us do and who will pay for any changes?
Leytonstone By- Election July 14th 2005
I hope you will indulge me in this, it is a plug for a particular candidate, so if your not interested, please don’t read any further and I apologise if you feel I have abused your e-mail address.
I’m sure you’ve received plenty of literature from the candidates and parties and you’ve probably made up your minds on who you are going to vote for. For me as Leader of the Council, the most important thing is that you do take the time and get out and vote, whether it is by post or by attending your designated Polling Station.
As a Labour Councillor in Leytonstone I would strongly urge you to back Marie Pye. She has a good track record of being involved in the Leytonstone community. Her boys go to George Tomlinson School and she is a Governor at Leytonstone School. She lives slap bang in the middle of the ward (unlike one of the other candidates who has openly declared that her ‘family home’ is in Redbridge- See Leyton and Leytonstone Guardian front page 23/06/05) and is a regular attendee and contributor at the Leytonstone Community Councils.
Marie was heavily involved in the campaign to get the long overdue community sports hall facility at Leytonstone School in the face of local Lib Dem Councillors opposition. The campaign was successful and some £3m of central government money is now being spent at the school. In light of Wednesdays Olympic decision what a bizarre message that would have sent out too our young people and the wider community, if the Lib Dems had got their way and the sports hall was blocked!
She is also a ‘doer’. Take for example the Fairlop Road flowerbed that her and her children have adopted. They add to the Councils role whenever they can, by weeding it, clearing it of rubbish and planting the area. A clear sign of someone who is literally prepared to get her hands dirty, for the community good!
She’s not just simply a ‘phone activist’ who tells you that a call has been made about this that and the other and name checks roads and streets. Marie is dedicated and committed to making Leytonstone better, if that’s what you want then you’ll vote for her on Thursday 14th July.
….and over to you..!!! Any comments/ issues for me?
Did you like the big screen in Church Lane Car Park? Could this be a venture worth repeating eg outdoor/ ‘screen on the green/ tarmac’ cinema?
Take care.

P.S.
As I went up to Harrogate for the last day of the Local Government Association Conference, last Thursday, I wrote my latest Residents Report, with the euphoria of the Olympic decision still buzzing in my mind, it was
only when I got to Harrogate that I started to recieve the messages about the attrocities happening in London.I know the community of Waltham Forest is united in its condemnation of those responsible for this brutal and cowardly attack on the people of London.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones, the injured, the traumatised and their families.
I’ve included a message on the events of last Thursday, which I have issued as Leader of the Council.
I’ve included my original Residents Report with some additions, because I believe that it follows the spirit that has been displayed by Londoners since last Thursdays events, that is not being deterred from going about
living our lives.
