Big up to the West Malvern massive

General

After nearly a year of thinking that living in Upton was ‘nice’ but wasn’t as edgy as we’d like I came away for a night out in West Malvern last night thinking “now that’s what I’m talking about”.

Boris (a.k.a. Simon) and Emma who like us recently moved from East London now live in West Malvern in a lovely house on the side of the hill overlooking Herefordshire with distant views of Wales. Boris has mentioned on a number of occaisions that his local boozer has a great open mic evening every Thursday night and how I should come along. Last night was the first night that I was able to make and boy am I glad that I went.

The place, called The Lamb, is what I would class as a proper pub with a cozy and welcoming feel. In the back bar where they keep all decorations up from previous celebrations (xmas, halloween etc) they had all the gear set up for the bands and there was already quite a few people there when we arrived at 8pm.

From 9pm to around midnight there was a number of accoustic sets by one and two peice acts each doing a few songs. All the bands are local and I was amazed by just how bloody good most of them were! The highlight was the last set by Velvet a very tight four piece that oozed talent; they are fronted by the very charismatic Mike Mann on the keyboards (who apparently works at the chippy in Barnards Green).

It was a great night and I also got to meet Boris’s next door neighbour Dan who was sound although he’s got a dubious theory about being able to drink as much of the draught cider there and not get a hangover. I had a go but definitely felt a bit fragile this morning. Dan also runs the local BBC Radio show called The Friday Session which showcases local unsigned music I’ll defintiely be checking out tonight.
