Knuckling Down Guest Notes

Thanks for agreeing to come on the Knuckling Down podcast.

Knuckling Down is a podcast for web professionals who want to make positive changes to their lives, careers or businesses. It covers a diverse range of topics loosely related to productivity, health and work, so a proportion of the shows should be of interest to most people.

The format of the show is pretty organic and unscripted. We’ll start off with a list of general seed questions that we’ll pre-agree and then see where things go. Please feel free to ad-lib and go off on tangents, I’ll pull things back if we’re short on time.

This is a not a technical podcast though given the audience it may stray in that direction from time to time. If so I’ll make sure that we don’t delve too deeply.

Two-way chat is strongly encouraged – this is not a one-way interview show – so feel free to challenge or comment on anything I say.

Also please remember that if you give one word answers to the questions it’ll be a pretty short show 🙂

We’ll aim for an hour which I may then edit down to be less. If you need to get off the call at a certain time, then please let me know in advance. Conversely, if you’re relaxed about time then please also let me know; if the conversation is flowing then it could be a shame to cut it short.

Technical stuff

We do the call over a Google Hangout. I’ll record the video just in case it’s ever useful for the future (please see below). You record just your voice locally and I record mine at my end. Once we’re done you email me a link to the file in Dropbox and I knit them together.

It doesn’t matter what tool you use as long as we get a recording of just your voice, I can (and will) record it at my end too but over VOIP the quality is not as good. Audacity or Garageband seem to be the favourites for recording if you already have them.

Once we’re both recording we’ll then both clap a few times into the microphone until we both do it simultaneously (it takes 3-4 goes to get this right) later when I’m editing the spikes in sound allow me to easily get the recording in sync.

Recording at 44.1KHz/16bit would be best please (this is OBS’s default).

If you have a gain setting, adjust it so there’s no hum. I try and get the sound level hitting between -12db and -6db when I’m talking at normal volume e.g. not hitting the red bits.

When we are recording and we decide that we need to repeat or delete a bit – say you realise that you just said something commercially sensitive, or you’d like to re-phrase what you said – just stick your hand up and we’ll note the time, I can then easily delete it later.

Swearing: I try to limit doing this myself but I’m relaxed about it happening, especially if it makes you more comfortable. No need to apologise if you do; I’m highly unlikely to edit it out. I’d prefer that we didn’t drop any C bombs though please!

Try and get rid of any obvious interference. I normally put a sign on my door to remind people I’m not available and I put my phone into airplane mode.

I suggest pausing any cloud sync services and close anything that might suddenly start sucking your bandwidth. A sudden download of a 1GB file doesn’t always play nicely with hangouts.

Depending on the sensitivity of your microphone, typing as we speak may not be a good idea. Also check your chair. Is it really creaky? Maybe don’t jiggle around as much as normal then?

I wear a big heavy bracelet that can bang against the table, I try to remember to remove this.

It’d be great if you could do a quick practice record to be sure that the levels are OK – you’re not really loud with lots of hiss or not too quiet – and that you can only hear your voice in the recording. OBS records as flv, so you’ll need to find something that can play this to check.

I intend to distribute the majority of our conversation as widely as possible via podcast platforms such as iTunes and also from KnucklingDown.com. This content will be free for everyone.

However, there is a possibility that in the future some of the content, audio or video, may be used for commercial purposes. For example: as additional previously unreleased supporting content for a book or course that I may or may not produce. I do not currently have plans to do either of these things but I would appreciate your permission to do this just in case.

I therefore include a simple release form below that I would appreciate you filling out.

If you do not complete the form, then I will NOT release our conversation.

If you are uncomfortable with the contents of our call being used for anything other than non-commercial purposes, then please check the box towards the end of the form. I will of course respect your wishes.

I’m really looking forward to our conversation. If you have any questions then please get in touch beforehand, or we can cover them off before we start recording.

Thanks in advance.
